I spend a lot of time volunteering for Avon Wildlife Trust, as Vice Chair and Treasurer of Keynsham Group. The work I do is very computer based, organising events, creating posters and articles, and dealing with social media and queries that come into the Group. Because of this I don't spend as much time as I should outside with nature. The 30Ks Wilder campaign for September has spurred me to get out there, smell the air and discover more in my local area while walking, with the added bonus of raising money for wildlife. I aim to visit a few AWT sites along the way.
Please support me with a donation towards my goal.
Due to an ankle injury I didn't manage to continue with my walking for the middle part of the month, however a weekend in Bude (not local but at least walking in the wild) I was able to add over 22k to my total and another walk of virtually 6k locally in Stockwood Vale yesterday brings me over my desired total of 60Ks. Photos will be added to Facebook when I have the time. It's been a busy month for me, so achieving double my goal has been fantastic. Also the amount of money now raised, approx £550 including offline donations, has been wonderful. A huge thanks to everyone who has supported me. Updated on Thu, September 30 2021, 1:05 PM
Well I could stop now, 35 kms in total after today's 11km walk, but now on my way to a second 30Km so why stop now? Today was a reasonably flat walk along the River Avon starting in Saltford and ending on the Bristol side of Keynsham before walking home. Lots more photos to view on my Facebook page HERE. Highlight was the kingfisher (or was it more than one?) first streaking across the river, and then sat on a dead branch before diving into the water and disappearing down the river. I could so easily have missed both of these, could only see the bird through bins when it was sat. Lots of dragonflies and butterflies including a small copper which is a first for me.

Lovely morning walk in Bristol City Centre this morning in the sunshine. It is amazing how much wild space there is in the centre, worth exploring further out at some stage. Another 9Ks towards my challenge, so now over 24ks and it's still only 6th September! For today's photos and report go to my Facebook post HERE.

Day two of my walking, and I revisited a site that is dear to me, Folly Farm. In 2010 I attended a residential wildlife filming course at the centre, and this inspired my video work. Take a look here: Kathy Farrell's Youtube Channel
During the course of the day, I walked all the trails and more, some paths were difficult to follow and some gates were closed meaning I had to climb over (whoops!) but I managed 8.3km towards my goal.
Well, first of the month and all that, so time to start my 30Ks Wilder challenge. The day didn’t start off exactly to plan but eventually got to the first site - AWT’s Grow Wilder where I spent a while wandering around the site, exploring the far reaches behind polytunnels and around compost piles. Then a short drive to Frenchay where I walked around the Moor plus the nature reserve next to Frenchay Hospital site, currently being redeveloped. This afternoon, a trip to AWT Willsbridge Valley topped off my walking making around 7ks today so a good start. Lots of lovely wild flowers, butterflies and bees, even an enormous hornet buzzed around me at one point. And the tranquility on Frenchay Moor was wonderful. I was hoping to share a Facebook link with the photos I took however FB keeps chucking me out when I try to load them Maybe tomorrow!
This September, we want you to take on 30kms in nature within 30 days and raise £30 for Avon's wildlife.
We’re on a mission to restore at least 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030 — by raising funds for us, you’ll be helping to support wildlife and wild places where you live, putting us right on track to reaching our goal.
Simply choose your activity (walking, running, cycling, or swimming) and the duration of your challenge (from one day to 30) and fundraise a minimum of £30. You could do it on your own or with friends and family.
